Lucerne- Gateway to Central Switzerland

Travelling to Lucerne the closest international airport is Zurich. Lucerne is a Fairy Tale City, complete with a glacial lake, covered bridges, church spires….. and of course the Swiss Alps. Sited on Lake Lucerne, it is a city embedded within an impressive mountainous panorama and is known as the pocket-sized version of Switzerland in a perfect blend.

It is the ideal starting point for many excursions to the highlights of central Switzerland. A trip up one of Lucerne’s regional mountains, the Pilatus or the Rigi – the queen of mountains – is a must. But excursions up onto the Stanserhorn, the Bürgenstock or a steamship cruise on Lake Lucerne with its many bends and arms are certainly no less worthy. The Gotthard Panorama Express originates in Lucerne and ferries its passengers to the foot of the Gotthard pass via Lake Lucerne and then continues by rail into Ticino, south of the Alpine ridge. The «cherry road» leads from Lucerne through the landscape of cheery trees and kirsch. Complete with gable paintings, the covered, medieval Chapel Bridge forms the centerpiece of Lucerne’s townscape built in the 14th century it crookedly crosses the river at a diagonal.  It is considered to be one of the oldest, covered wooden bridges in Europe. It connects the old and the new part of the city across the River Reuss.

Another landmark of Lucerne that demands attention is the Jesuit Church that looms over the water. The Jesuit Church was built in 1666 and was the first Baroque church in Switzerland. Our next most popular attraction is the Löwendenkmal or monument to the Dying Lion and it is Switzerland’s oldest preserved figurative monument.

One of the best things about Lucerne is that it’s at the heart of Switzerland, meaning you can explore the surrounding area on some great day-trips. You can head to the icy heights of the Jungfraujoch, Europe’s highest railway station and home to the Great Aletsch Glacier, as well as a number of famous peaks. Other cities are a short train ride away as well. You can take a trip to the capital of Bern, or check out Interlaken which is known as the adrenaline capital of Switzerland.

So explore the spirit of Switzerland from the heart itself.
